Hazardous illegal dumping in Izotsha

2017-05-11 06:03

A MARBURG business owner has raised concerns over businesses that dump refuse near his warehouse in Izotsha.

The business owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said he has to constantly clean up litter on his business premises, including pharmaceutical supplies and expired food products.

“Last week we saw piles of spoilt chicken and other meat products in the yard, just a few days after we cleaned up some medical supplies which were also dumped on our property,” he
said.

He said he was concerned over the health hazard the dumping posed on him and his staff.

“Besides costing us a lot of money, because we have to clean everything up ourselves, this illegal dumping poses a serious health hazard for us and the environment.”

He said he didn’t know who could be doing the dumping.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipal spokesperson Simon April said illegal dumping is prohibited by municipal by-laws and liable parties would be fined.

“The municipality has conducted a number of awareness campaigns and educational waste management programmes on this, especially in the Marburg and Merlewood areas.

“Business owners can contact our customer services centre which can process the complaint accordingly,” said April.
