ANOTHER month has come and gone and once again Hibiscus Kennel Club has been very active.

Unfortunately, attendance has been poor, which we fully understand as the weather has been extremely hot, but remember the trainers are in attendance and go to the same amount of effort for two members as for 20. Spare us a thought.

We congratulate Gaby Frey and her amazing little dog Scooby for being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for their journey together over the last 13 years. This little dog has had numerous setbacks in her life but she bounces back better and better each time. They are also Triple Grand Champions KUSA National Champions and received colours in all three disciplines.

Sue McCay and Gita received provincial colours and Renate Haussmann and her Daxie Mein Schatz are Top Achiever Mini Senior Carting for the third time.

We had a fun Pre-Valentine’s Day on February 11 where the emphasis was on fun. Instead of using made-to- measure specific apparatus we were innovative and raided our husbands garages and “throwaway one-day places” and built an obstacle course which was sometimes challenging and sometimes great fun.

Well done to the members who continued the theme by wearing red and adding to the festive atmosphere. We were glad to see that members were considerate towards their dogs and limited “dress up” to a scarf or something small.

The following day was show time with a record amount of dogs entering the three disciplines. We thank Tracy Norton and Taryn Murphy for the courses and for judging and as always thank you to Montego for their generous sponsorship. The show was likened to a day enjoying a picnic which is a great compliment to those who work behind the scenes to make sure that every show is a picnic.

At last our Flyball training is taking off thanks to Renate Haussmann. This past weekend we had a trainer from Gauteng showing us the correct way of getting the maximum out of our dogs while they enjoy the game. The main criteria is a dog who is ball crazy. If you have one of those come and join the club.

Hibiscus Kennel Club is on the Port Shepstone Borough Field in Quarry Road.

As not all news can be good news and we are sad to inform members that we had a burglary on Wednesday evening. Fortunately ADT were quick to respond and the burglars left without taking anything of value. Thank you to them as well as the SAPS who attended to the matter within minutes. We also thank Highland Glass for their prompt service. We were able to secure the club by lunch time on Thursday.
