Is English your language?

2015-11-19 06:00

I FIND it quite absurd that black students in some of our institutions of higher education spend so much energy and time fighting the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.

Their argument, wait for it, is that Afrikaans is “the tongue of the oppressor”. How and what about English? They then defend their weak position by claiming that “English is a global language of commerce”. Fair enough. If you visit their first part of the argument, you soon realise that here we are dealing with people who choose to read history upside down.

There are books and libraries and it is their duty to go test their argument, a weak argument. They do not realise or choose not to see to how much of an extent English is being shoved down our throats.

Sadly, these students do not realise that English is not even their language.

Most of them can neither write nor read in their mother tongue, but are very quick to fight to be taught in English. Is English your language?
