Litter, litter and more litter

2016-03-24 06:00

I WENT for an hour-long walk two weeks ago on a Sunday morning along Port Shepstone beach and picked up a bag of recyclable cans and bottles that people had discarded along the street. I was amazed and really disappointed.

A week later, I went for another slightly different walk and picked up two more bags of recyclable materials that people had thrown away. I simply cannot believe the waste and laziness of residents. Is it really that difficult to put recyclable materials into recycling containers? And I won’t even talk about the actual garbage in our streets.

It simply amazes me that we have all been taught how important recycling is, yet, we continue to just throw containers onto the streets, (where they end up in our streams and drinking water supply), onto our lawns, and in our public parks. Do we think that litter is a visual improvement to our towns? Are we really that lazy, or do we simply not care?

I am extremely disappointed if the answer to any of these questions is yes. Could we all just recycle our waste the next time that we drink out of a recyclable can or bottle? If you can’t find a recycling container nearby, take it home and place it with your home recycling. We do recycle at home, right?
