Man assaulted at Marburg hardware store

THE last thing a 27-year-old Umzumbe man expected while shopping at a home supply store was to get assaulted and thrown out.

Zamokwakhe Maphumulo purchased building supplies from a Marburg hardware store last Thursday and asked the store to notify him before the R13 224 delivery was due to be made.

“I wanted the builder to be present when the delivery was made so he could check that the goods were what he required, but nobody called me, and the wrong length of timber was sent,” said Maphumulo.

He then returned to the store the next day - Friday - to rectify the problem but, he claimed, staff were not helpful.

“I told the salesman I would like the correct measurement and that I would pay in any outstanding money if I had to,” he said.

The owner then appeared and Maphumulo told him he had received bad customer service from the staff.

“He punched me in the stomach and grabbed me by my collar and pushed me towards the entrance. He told me I was wasting his time as he was on his way to mosque,” said Maphumulo.

“I was shocked at the way I was treated. I called the police and reported the case. I also asked for a refund.”

However, Maphumulo only received R12 224 as R1 000 was retained by the business for labour and handling charges.

“They told me to sign a document accepting this agreement or else I would not get any of my money back. I was desperate so I signed the document,” said Maphumulo.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid confirmed that an assault case is being investigated.

“Nobody has been charged,” she said.
