Man dies after tavern stabbing

2016-01-14 06:00

A STABBING which took place at a tavern in Park Rynie on Sunday left one person dead.

Constable Sindisiwe Shabalala of the Scottburgh SAPS responded to the complaint at about 4.30am.

The victim, Mbongeni Slangwe (27), was taken to hospital before police could arrive.

He sustained a stab wound to the left side of his chest, but succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival.

Detective Warrant Officer Yugen Moodley of the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team sourced information about the suspects who fled the scene in a car headed for Umgababa and alerted his colleagues Detective Constable Weidon Govender from the Task Team and Constable Preshan Ishwarlall of the Umzinto K9 Unit even before police could receive an official complaint of the stabbing.

The suspect’s vehicle was intercepted in the Umkomaas area and both suspects, aged 22 and 19, were arrested and detained.

Ravi Dean Naidoo (22) appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

He was remanded back into police until his next court appearance on 25 January when his bail application will be heard. Charges against the second accused were withdrawn as there was insufficient evidence for a successful prosecution.

Police recovered the alleged murder weapon. The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Alton Pakkies of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service. - Supplied.
