WITH seven beaches of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality receiving Blue Flag status the question why Margate Beach is not on the list is asked.

Margate Beach lost its international Blue Flag status after sea water quality tests revealed contaminated samples from nearby stormwater and sewage systems in 2012.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality manager Max Mbili said in a media briefing at the council chambers on Tuesday that they will work around the clock to regain the Blue Flag status at that beach.

He said the contamination still needs to be sorted out.

“The water quality of Margate Beach is still being affected by a stream that flows from the taxi rank to the ocean and we are in negotiations with Ugu District to see to the matter,” said Mbili.

Mbili said as the municipality they would like Margate to regain its Blue Flag status as it is one of the busiest and most popular beaches on the South Coast.

“It is not the municipality’s aim for all its beaches to get Blue Flag status, however its is our aim to ensure that the water quality on all our beaches is good and safe for all to enjoy,” he said.
