Margate community call for sports field

2017-07-27 06:01

A GROUP of community organisations converged at Margate Middle School on Thursday to discuss the absence of a secure sports field for the Margate community.

At the meeting were representatives from war room, Eyethu Senior Citizens, Life Zone Foundation and hosts, Margate Middle School.

The Margate Middle School principal, Sivalingam Moodley, said he shared the concerns expressed by the community as there was no sports field even at his school and pupils were forced to go without any sporting activities as a result.

He said should the group be successful in obtaining a secure sports field for the school he would be willing to open it up to the community to use.

“At the moment we only have the Margate park to use for sport and that is not a sports field, it is a recreational park, and is not secure,” said Lifezone Chairperson Sipho Matiwane.

The group resolved to submit their plea to the Department of Education, Sports and Recreation and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. There will be a follow-up meeting on August 12 at Margate Middle School, and the community is encouraged to attend.
