THE Margate whale-viewing deck, which was recently revamped, has been vandalised.

Wood was removed and it looks as though a wrecking ball was dropped on the structure.

According to Hibiscus Coast Seconds, the Margate community and whale watchers are outraged and want the people responsible to be arrested. However, there are no CCTV cameras there, so finding the culprits is out of the question.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality spokesperson Simon April said it is unfortunate there are no cameras there, however, the municipality will look at repairing the deck.

“The municipality will see if there are funds available to repair the deck, he said.

On social networks the community said the people who destroyed the infrastructure are breaking by-laws and have no place in society and that the security around such structures should be enforced. Others feel the renovations of the deck were sub-standard.

“It’s not just vandalism, it also points to the fact that the original structure was sub-standard. Anyone with anything upstairs would know that the renovations would not last down here.

“Backhanders from people who tendered for the work play a big part in why we sit with this today.

“Yes, I know that there is vandalism, but the work was sub-standard from day one,” said an angered community member.
