MORE than 150 cats and dogs were sterilised at a campaign at the Izingolweni Mbeni hall this past week.

The campaign was organised by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and formed part of a province-wide campaign, which saw newly qualified veterinarians conduct sterilisations as part of their community service mandate.

Animals came from Ezingolweni and surrounds and were castrated, and vaccinated for rabies, Parvo virus, Para influence, Adenosine virus and distemper, free of charge.

Ugu Vet Services manager Themba Maluleke said the programme assists poor communities in protecting their animals without having to worry about cost.

“Birth and disease control of these animals is very important because some of these diseases are deadly and can be transmitted to humans,” said Maluleke.
