TOWARDS strengthening the district’s thriving economy through mitigating the scourge of poverty, joblessness and inequality, our municipality has introduced a local economic development (LED) initiative that prioritises the advancement of small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMME).

This week, wish lists for five SMMEs and informal traders under Ray Nkonyeni and Umzumbe municipalities were granted, donating resources worth about R1 million combined to them, which is the catalyst to achieving economic growth and development in the district.

The municipality donated filmmaking and photography equipment to a production company owned by a young person. Further to this, four companies were assisted with block-making material, including river sand, wheelbarrows, spades, bags of cement, Jojo tanks and a block-making machine.

The informal traders were also given alternative energy support commonly known as Wonder Cookers as per their request to the municipality.

LED is the legal responsibility of the government to ensure that a conducive environment is created for robust and sustainable economic development, and that the quality of life of residents is improved through the provision of basic services, job creation and poverty alleviation.

Our efforts are only in the beginning phase and starting from this programme we will be assisting a bakery support programme and will provide equipment and raw material support to bakers.

The agricultural development will focus on rural medium-scale farmers, supporting them with training, market access, infrastructure, implements and various capacity development initiatives among other LED programmes.

Our LED section has also been tasked to ensure the revival of non-functional projects that were implemented previously and give them implements and equipment.

The municipality will make sure these programmes are monitored to ensure their success and respond to the district’s thriving economy.
