WITH the ever-increasing demand for water, Ugu has moved swiftly with plans towards the refurbishment and upgrading of our water infrastructure.
This was evident when a multimillion-rand project was launched at KwaGoqoza at Ezinqoleni Ward 3 on Tuesday.

Ugu District mayor Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede, accompanied by Ezinqoleni mayor, Cllr Amon Mpisi, turned the sod as a symbol of the implementation of the extension of Umtamvuna Water Treatment Works. A total of R45 million will be used for the upgrading of the Umtamvuma scheme.

Detailed scope of works include the construction of reinforced concrete clarifier, construction of reinforced sand filter with associated building, construction of a five-mega-litre reinforced concrete reservoir, construction of access and internal roads together with parking area, construction and installation of pipe work and the construction of electrical-mechanical equipment.

Not only will this be good news for the communities of KwaXolo and KwaNzimakwe tribal authorities and the communities in the coastal stream from Port Edward to Southbroom, the commencement of the project will benefit 30 communities who will get job opportunities and be able to provide for their families. Icon Constructions has been appointed as contractor with Vuba Engineers appointed as consultants. Both have been formally introduced to the community of KwaGoqoza by Cllr Gumede.

The project is expected to be complete by June 2018.
