Monster Marine Meander next month

AFTER hosting a beach walk from Umtentweni to Southport, and being told the distance was too short, John Irven decided to organise something “bigger and better”.

Irven, chairperson of the community policing forum in Southport as well as the area’s tourism committee, thought up the Monster Marine Meander.

The walk is part of the South Coast Sardine Festival and takes place on Sunday, 17 July at 8am.

Positioned between two Blue Flag beaches on the South Coast - Umzumbe and Southport - it promises to be fun.

“The first walk attracted about 85 people and I’m hoping there will be more at this one. Nobody really knows just how magical and beautiful our coastline is. Hopefully they’ll realise this by walking the stretch,” he said.

“The interest in the walk has been great so far,” he added.

The eight-kilometre walk will be marshalled by Lazer 911, locals and the Southport Tourism Area committee.

Online pre-registration costs R25 and all proceeds will be donated to Pollyanna’s Place, a house that provides trauma counselling.

“We would like to have some entertainment at the finish, but we know that times are tough so we have been slow in obtaining sponsorship. If there are any musicians who would like to provide some music, please contact me,” he said.
