BEING a mother is an “overwhelming feeling of love” says Shelley Beach mother of two, Vimmy Moodley.

As the country celebrates Mother’s Day on Sunday the Moodleys share some of their favourite “mommy moments”.

Daughter Creléisha said her mother’s best quality is her optimism. “The best advice my mom has ever given me is, ‘If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything at all’. “I love it when I’m busy and she calls me into her room to lay with her a bit. We talk and catch up and then I run back to my room when I hear dad’s footsteps up the stairs.”

Vimmy, however, maintains that the best way to be a mother is to be a mother first and a friend second.

“We all want close relationships with our children but that doesn’t mean we have to relive our childhood with them to reach that,” said Vimmy.

“Times have drastically changed. Yes, give them space to be themselves, but definitely be the over-protective, paranoid mom that your children loathe because in the end it’s for their benefit and one day you will be appreciated for it,” said Vimmy.

With Creléisha now 15 and Vimmy’s son Creole (19), she said motherhood has taught her to be patient. “Creole has matured so much over the past couple of years and so have I. He has taught me many facts of life that I look at him in awe thinking to myself ‘that is my son’.

“With Creléisha, I felt like she had always been here, always been a part of me and that I couldn’t wait for her to actually show up. And when she did, yes I know it sounds so cliché but ... our family was complete.” Vimmy accredits her parenting skills to her mother. “To my mom, I love you so much. Thank you for being my mommy and for always encouraging me with your positive phone calls every day. Thank you for always showering me with your purest love and support. May you always be blessed,” said Vimmy.

“And to all the mothers on the South Coast, I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Mother’s Day. You all are so special, I send lots of hugs, love and light.”
