PHILASANDE Projects handed over food parcels to five families in Umzumbe whom they identified as being “less fortunate”.

Vee Msweli from the Philansande Project said they identified families that needed help and found more than a handful.

“We went around the community and identified families who are less fortunate and who we felt we can help with food parcels,” said Msweli.

She said they reached out to the Office of the Premier for food donations and the office did not hesitate to assist.

“The Office of the Premier gave us food for five families - Hlengwa, Mthuli and three Mqadi families.”

“Families that benefitted were Thandiwe Hlengwa, a grandmother living with her unemployed great- grandchildren. Her grandchildren do not even have birth certificates for them to register for a grant,” said Msweli.

“The other family which needed attention from Department of Social Development (DSD) was that of Amanda Mqadi, an orphan living with her siblings, who is doing matric,” she said.

Msweli said they felt that DSD should also intervene in helping these families as they are very challenged.

She said there are many other families in the area that need help and they are still seeking donations from individuals, businesses and communities.
