Police woman finally sentenced for murder

2016-02-25 06:00

A 15-YEAR sentence was finally handed down on 18 February to Port Shepstone police woman, Balungile Madlala of Mbotsha in Bhobhoyi for killing her husband, Thulebone Madlala and her mother-in-law Belinda Madlala.

After many sittings and negotiations about the case a Ramsgate magistrate found Balungile guilty on two counts. However, a third person was murdered on the day of the incident, but the court did not sentence for that.

Balungile will have to serve seven years, with the possibility of parole thereafter.

The magistrate took into consideration the circumstances that led to the murders and reduced the initial sentence from 23 years.

Although Madlala’s family accepted the sentence they felt it was not long enough.

Bonga Madlala, brother and son of the deceased said she deserved a longer sentence.

“The sentence given to Balungile is short - she killed three people, but got a sentence only enough for one.

“However, as the family we accept the ruling,” he said.

Bonga said the family can now claim their brother’s insurances as procedures had been put on hold because of the case being in progress.

He said he believes the spirits of his late mother and brother will now rest as this matter has been finalised.
