IT is that time of year when families are gearing up for their summer getaway. You have your mind on what to pack, booking flights, hotels and planning your itinerary.

Wash, dry and put away your laundry before you leave so that all you have to do when you get back is wash the clothes you used on holiday.

But before you leave, consider getting your home ready for your return. With these handy tips, you can rest easy knowing your house is in order - making your ‘back to reality’ transition that much smoother.

• Clean the fridge

Donate any food that will expire while you’re away. If possible, freeze the food. Also take care to wipe down your counters and shelves before you leave.

• Tackle the laundry

Coming back to a pile of laundry is not the best way to arrive home. Wash, dry and put away your laundry before you leave so that all you have to do when you get back is wash the clothes you used on holiday.

• Tidy the house

As your time departure day approaches you’re so ready for your break that you could be tempted to just leave everything as it is and deal with it when you get back. As tempting as this is, don’t do it. You’ll be glad to come home to a clean and tidy house. Don’t leave any dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher, take out the trash, sweep or vacuum the floors, and dust and wash down the bathrooms.

• Safety

Set timers on a few outdoor and indoor lights, especially the living room and bedroom to discourage thieves. Make sure your windows are closed to prevent rain from getting in and locked for safety. Unplug your automatic garage door to keep thieves from opening it with a universal remote or getting in by cracking the code.

Be discreet about posting your getaway details on social media.

• Be energy efficient

Unplug your appliances, computers, electronics and other items that are not needed while you are away. According to Eskom, many appliances use power even when they’re turned off.

• Miscellaneous essentials

Make arrangements for your pets. If you’re taking your pet with you or will be boarding him, don’t leave food in his dish.

Have a trusted neighbour or relative water your plants and collect your mail. Ask them to keep an eye on the house for any problems and also arrange to have any bills that are due while you are away paid. - Property24.
