HUNDREDS of residents in the Umtentweni, Port Shepstone, Uvongo and Ramsgate areas complained of muddy, brown water coming out of their taps last week.

In some areas the water was discoloured and in others, it was dirty.

Spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama said the discoloured water was due the malfunction of the dosing pump due to the recent electricity outage.

“The electricity outage also caused the filtration process to be inefficient for a short while. The electricity was restored and the pump was reset.

“The municipality is currently performing continuous water-quality monitoring as part of the normal process control.

“As a water services authority, we strive to continuously supply customers with quality drinking water that is within the South African National Drinking Standards SANS241 and is safe for human consumption,” he added.

Zama said the municipality apologises to customers who may have been affected by this temporary inconvenience.
