IF you’re looking for delicious food, a great atmosphere and top service and treatment, look no further than the Pumphouse in Manaba. The restaurant, which has over 100 years of history behind it, gets its name from what it was initiated as.

“It was one of three water-pump houses, established by the English when they landed at the South Coast over a a century ago. There is apparently old equipment that is buried underneath the restaurant,” said manager Carol Schmidt.

“It’s now a place where family and friends come and relax and enjoy good food,” she said.

The restaurant is run on “girl power”, a team comprising of Carol and Celeste and kitchen and bar staff.

Their comprehensive menu consists of breakfasts, starters, mains, light meals, salads for the health conscious and something for the children and portions are generous and priced right.

There are daily specials that are advertised on their Facebook page. Tuesdays is burger day where patrons can enjoy a burger with two 300g patties and chips for only R50.

Because nobody wants to spend Sunday in the kitchen, patrons can take advantage of a roasted meat, vegetables, roast potatoes, rice and gravy.

Other favourites include eisbein, chicken schnitzel, mussel pot, Fibi’s fresh fish, chicken livers and the rib and calamari basket. The babalas breakfast consist of mielie pap, mince and eggs.

Other than daily specials, the fully stocked bar also caters for everyone’s needs. There is a pensioner’s hour every day from 10am to 12pm - buy two, get one free of any house brand or SAB product.

This is followed by two happy hours from 12pm to 2pm and then from 4pm to 6pm. House brands are sold at R22 for a double and a mix.

House brands consist of Richelieu brandy, Montego rum, Mainstay cane and Smirnoff vodka.

And just when you thought that was all the Pumphouse has to offer, a special menu is brought out every holiday season, which consists mainly of seafood.

Upcoming events at the restaurant include a wine tasting evening on Friday, 21 October as well as World Pasta Day and World Sandwich Day where the restaurant will offer meals to suit the theme.
