Pupil drowns in tidal pool

2016-03-03 06:00

A GROUP of pupils on an excursion from Highflats, were swimming in the tidal pool at the Port Shepstone beachfront, when three got into difficulty.

Two were assisted by nearby people, but a 15-year-old girl disappeared under the water.

Constable Wally Daniel, a police diver from Port Shepstone, and Constable Zonwabele Mpofana from the 10111 call centre, arrived at the scene and entered the water to look for the girl.

Daniel then found her body and retrieved it from the water.

An inquest docket is being investigated.

“Police warn people not to enter rough and deep water, especially if they are not strong swimmers. Youngsters should be under constant supervision by adults when they go swimming or play in swimming pools, dams, rivers or the ocean,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.
