THE Amakhono Heritage Festival on the South Coast once again celebrated all things proudly African on Sunday 18 September. With wet and muddy weather conditions some invited guest were unable to make the event.

With support from Ugu South Coast Tourism, the festival encourages visitors to experience some of the South Coast’s most spectacular rural scenery and hinterland.

Guests gathered at the Bhuqu sports grounds after a guided tour of Betania village, where visitors enjoyed the finest hospitality.

Guests also sampled traditional foods ujeqe, umgxabhiso, isigwaqane, isijingi, isigwamba and isitambu and umqombothi (Zulu beer).

The festival also offered the visitors and the community a variety of indigenous and traditional music and dance.

Cliffy the Clown entertained the children making animal shaped balloons and there was a jumping castle for the little ones.

Arts and crafts were also on display, among other stalls and guests could buy items ranging from bead work to hand-made goods.

“There was lots of excitement and the turnout was amazing,” said Maxwell Mhlongo of South Coast tourism.
