Recycling project is not a mess

2015-12-17 06:00

THE Fever reported last week that materials from the recycling bins outside Harbourview Spar, had not been collected in months after a reader sent in photos of the mess.

Jade Labuschagne, facilities manager for the Beekman Group, said the initiative was actually run by the company and Harbourview Spar, which sponsors the site and had nothing to do with the municipality.

“The recycling bins behind Spar are emptied weekdays, except for public holidays. They have not been neglected for months and I have a service register to prove this,” she said.

“The bins are serviced by Coastal Waste Services.”

She said the photograph published was not of the recycling bin area but of the Spar receiving depot and was more than likely taken on a Monday morning after the public have littered and dumped there garbage over the weekend.

“The fenced off recycling bin area is opened during Spar’s operating hours and is locked after hours. The only time it may be messy is over public holidays or on a Monday morning.

“However, it is serviced on Monday’s mid-morning so is not untidy for long,” said Labuschagne.

She added that Coastal Waste Services employs a woman who sits within the fenced off recycling area from Monday to Friday and keeps it in order.

“This has greatly contributed to the success of the project,” she said.
