Residents complain about taxi arrival time

2016-11-24 06:01

MERLEWOOD residents are complaining that taxis take too long to arrive and that in some instances they have to wait for more than 30 minutes before one comes along.

A resident told the Fever about an incident on Thursday morning, where he was with two elderly women, who needed to be rushed to the doctor, and no taxi was available The resident said they waited almost 45 minutes.

“We stood by the bus stop and no taxi came. There was an empty taxi parked next to the shelter, but it was not moving. We decided to get a lift from a neighbour and then the taxi driver started threatening us,” said the resident.

He said the driver allegedly became aggressive and told the neighbour not to pick people up from the bus stop.

“He never asked where we were going or told us that a taxi was on the way,” he said.

Merlewood is the route of Murchison Taxi Association (MTA). Taxis in the area also operate in Mkholombe.

A rank was opened in Mkholombe entrance and taxis are always parked there waiting to transport people to the Port Shepstone CBD.

MTA chair Bhuthana Sikhosana confirmed that there are taxis for the Merlewood community, however, those taxis start commuting from Mkholombe then go to Merlewood, which does not take long.

“We did have a problem before - the community complained that Murchison taxis are always full when passing Merlewood and people are left waiting for long. That is why the Mkholombe rank was opened,” said Sikhosana

He said the association uses a radio to communicate and the reason why the empty taxi was parked by the shelter was for the driver to communicate with another taxi to notify him that there were people in Merlewood in need of transport.

Sikhosana said the problem is that the community is impatient.

Sikhosana said he apologises to the residents and assured them that the association does its best to meet their needs.

He said when there are issues the community should contact the association office or the rank committee.

Committee members for the area are Jomo on 083 343 3312, Vice on 078 777 9677 or Boni on 078 432 4782. The association office is on 039 687 7886.
