Response received regarding broken X-ray machine

2016-02-18 06:00

IN response to Port Shepstone Mortuary’s X-ray equipment not functioning, the Department of Health’s Sam Mkhwanazi said resources are often shared among health facilities as and when necessary to ensure that service delivery is not compromised.

“This includes when equipment is broken and requires repairing or servicing, which may take time due to the supply chain management processes.”

A recent visit to the mortuary by the Democratic Alliance revealed that the facility’s X-ray equipment was not working after it was loaned to Gale Street Mortuary in Durban.

The DA then wrote to KZN Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, stating that he must treat this situation as urgent. The letter also asked for an explanation as to why the machine was loaned to Gale Street Mortuary in the first place and why it has taken a DA oversight visit for this matter to be prioritised.

The press statement, issued to media houses last Thursday, said: “On the positive side, the DA found that the Port Shepstone mortuary was a clean, well-run facility with other equipment in working order.

“Staff were present and courteous and showed members of the public the compassion required given the position they work in.”
