Revisit views on condoms

2015-12-24 06:00

REGRETTABLY, religious and cultural morality must be adapted or compromised to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids and other sexual diseases.

Abstaining completely from sex is unnatural and saying “no” to sex can be difficult, but having sex has consequences.

Refraining from sex before marriage is the only rational approach to the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), teenage pregnancy and other personal problems that accompany sexual escapades.

Unfortunately, it is clear today that messages about safe sex, saving sex for marriage and the harms of illicit sexual activities are not getting through and precautionary measures are not taken.

Religious and traditional leaders need to revisit their views and language on the usage of condoms. Some religious leaders’ blanket resistance to condom usage hurts the fight to curb the spread of HIV.

By asking religious leaders to revisit their views on condoms, I am not asking for the promotion of condoms in learning institutions or for sex outside marriage, but to allow it for specific medical needs.

Different strains of HIV can be passed between two HIV-infected people, making treatment even more difficult.

Condoms have an important role to play in the prevention of STDs, especially in HIV reinfection, or super infection, as it is sometimes called.

Well thought out educational programmes and constructive awareness campaigns are important tools to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids.

How much food do you need to concentrate?

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
