RNM’s ‘lost’ millions

2017-08-17 06:05

THE Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has lost R35 million in irregular expenditure through alleged acts of misconduct by senior managers.

This was revealed to the Fever by an internal source recently.

The matter is now being investigated by Cogta.

Another source said just before the merger of Ezinqoleni and Hibiscus municipalities, a number of construction projects were approved.

It has been revealed that construction of a community hall, an access road and a sport field were paid for, but they don’t exist.

“Now those projects are nowhere to be found, what happed to this R35 million?

“They must stop playing hide and seek,” said the source.

It has been reported that Cogta instructed the municipality to go to Ezingolweni and check if those projects exist and then conduct an internal investigation.

“Cogta asked why they just brought the matter to them without conducting a proper investigation.

“The municipality needs to deal with corrupt officials first before the department intervenes,” another source said

The Fever is aware of the names of the officials and councillors who hav e been implicated.

It is said when the matter of the missing funds was raised, a former Ezinqoleni official decided to leave his job at RNM.

Mayor Nomusa Cynthia Mqwebu confirmed that the matter is now being investigated by Cogta.

“Cogta has appointed independent auditors and investigators to deal with the matter,” she said.
