Salga Games to be launched this month

2016-10-20 06:00

THE district municipality will launch the 2016 South African Local Government Association (Salga) games at Desroches Hotel on 28 October.

The games began 14 years ago with only two codes of sport, but the event has grown over the years.

Ray Nkonyeni Mayor, councillor Nomusa Mqwebu, said in a council meeting last Tuesday that preparations for the district to hold the games are in order, however, some of the venues that were named for various sporting codes were un-available.

The Margate Olympic pool is one of the venues that will not be available as the facility needs to be renovated.

“Margate pool is not available for the Salga games as the pool is leaking and to have it ready for Salga games would require a budget,” she said

Mqwebu said another issue with regards to finance is the accommodation of councillors during the games.

“Councillors will not be booked into hotels for the duration of the games, the reason is that there are no funds for this.

“The municipality will provide transport to and from the venue for those who do not have their own vehicle,” said Mqwebu.

Councillors raised the issue of food and asked if they will be getting meals as the games go on all day.

Mqwebu said the issue of food would be considered and there might be a central place where councillors will meet for meals.
