SAPS murderer receives high sentences

ON 17 June, at the Ramsgate High Court, Ayanda Hlupeko (30) was sentenced to three life terms for armed robbery with aggravated circumstances, three counts of murder and attempted murder, which took place in Harding in April 2015.

On 30 April, 2015 at around 9.30pm, three Harding police officers responded to an alarm that went off at a wholesalers in the Harding CBD.

Unknown to the officers, there was an armed robbery in progress and when they drove towards the wholesaler, the suspects opened fire on the police vehicle with AK-47 rifles.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the police vehicle caught alight as a result of the automatic gunfire unleashed by Hlupeko and his accomplices.

“Bystanders managed to rescue a female police officer from the vehicle while the other two, Constable Mpendulo Welcome Jaca (37) and Constable Zamukwanda Wiseman Majoka (34), were stuck in the burning vehicle. All three officers died at the scene,” said Mhlongo.

Hlupeko was sentenced to 15 years for robbery, three life terms for the murder of two police officers and one security guard, who was also shot during the robbery.

He was further sentenced 10 years for attempted murder.
