THE final Ugu Cluster Detective Commanders meeting was held jointly with the annual Cluster Detectives Performance Awards at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh on Friday. The function was attended Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Thembi Ndlovu and local businessman, Ebrahim Ally. The function began with the cluster detective head, Colonel Iks Naicker, welcoming guests, detective commanders and detectives of the various police stations within the cluster. This was followed by a prayer by Major Mirriam Nompsikelelo Mvundla of the cluster office.

Discussions at the detectives commanders meeting revolved around crime, exchanging of best practices and festive season duties.

Ndlovu spoke to the detectives about various issues related to crime detection, crime scene management, gathering of evidence and professional conduct of members of the South African Police Service.

She urged members to be proactive and not only focus on investigating crime after it has occurred, but to take steps to prevent them from occurring. She stressed the importance of an active and effective informer network and called on the detectives to expand their informer network so that their solvency and arrest rates improve.

The cluster commander spoke out strongly against corruption and vowed to remove any “bad apples” from the service, adding that every SAPS member has signed the SAPS code of conduct and is expected to conduct himself or herself accordingly.

During her address Ndlovu motivated the members to be loyal and dedicated to the police service and to protect and serve their fellow countrymen with pride and honour.

“We must ensure that every criminal is removed from our streets and put into Correctional Service facilities where they may be rehabilitated before they are reintegrated into society.

“We cannot allow our defenceless and vulnerable women and children to be raped, robbed and killed by these thugs,” said the general.

The award for the best performing detective service for the year 2014/2015 went to the Msinsini SAPS, with Umzinto taking second place and Sawoti, third.

St Faiths SAPS took first position for the highest number of arrests followed by Creighton and Mehlomnyama in second and third position, respectively. First position for the highest convictions was awarded to the Msinsini SAPS, Creighton took second and Sawoti, third.
