AT an Inter-Forces Practical Pistol Tournament in Pretoria earlier this month three Port Shepstone SAPS members took part and emerged winners.

The invitation came after Warrant Officer Andries van den Berg, Warrant Officer Piet Marx and Constable Zonwabele Mpofana received their national colours for practical pistol shooting last year.

The tournament was held at Eeufees Shooting Range where 58 participants took part and 13 stages of shooting had to be completed.

“However, heavy rain made it impossible, but at the end seven stages were selected which had to be completed by the participants, regardless of the weather,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“It was extremely difficult, especially when the participants were drenched to the bone, but they persevered,” she added.

The participating members were awarded national colours. This was the first time since 2009 that the SAPS national team participated in such a tournament.

“Practical pistol shooting as a sport in the SAPS is beneficial to members as it enhances their firearm-handling skills,” she said.

“It also prepares them mentally for various scenarios involving the use of firearms. Well done to the members,” added Wiid. - Supplied.
