LIRA’S sixth album Born Free landed on my desk for review around the same time the SABC announced it will be playing 90% percent local content across its radio stations.
Going through the CD over and over, it is safe to say Born Free could be Lira’s most honest and important album.
Production throughout is crisp and compliments the lyrics well. With 16 tracks, the album has something for everyone and the listener doesn’t feel short-changed.

The opening track, an introduction titled Freedom, sets the theme of the album and towards the end, in a word clip, an old man asks, “We are free. And so what do we do with that freedom?”

After that introspective introduction, things kick off in high gear as the second danceable track, Be About It, takes the freedom theme further, as Lira asks, “What does it mean to be born free?”
The track encourages listeners to talk about what freedom means and what to do with it.

A number of tracks stand out and the album is interspersed with clips of Lira and others saying what freedom means to them.
The 11th track, Let Go Sometimes, is laid back and I foresee it getting lots of airplay.

In this age of meaningless music, this album gives the listener something intelligent to listen to, while at the same time, be entertained.
