Student seeks travel funds for international work programme

CHARMAINE Blose of Mehlomnyama is seeking funding towards a student work programme offered by the Overseas Visitors Club (OVC), in partnership with Gaylord Resort in Texas, which she applied for. The student work programme is only offered to university students.

Blose is doing her first year in journalism at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and says she learnt of the programme at visit by OVC to the university.

“On the day of the visit, I knew this could be a once-of-a- lifetime opportunity for me as, from a young age, I have always wanted to go overseas, but it all seemed impossible as my family is not well off.”

She comes from a family of six, and her mother is their only source of income.

OVC travel consultant Steff Boyd confirmed that Blose needs financial assistance for the programme.

In an email Boyd said the total cost for the programme, including travel fees, accommodation and a visa, is
R40 000.

“The student work U.S. programme is open to South African university students and takes place it during our winter holiday season [November to December]. The students spend eight weeks working at the Gaylord Resort and on completion are given an option to travel for a month.

“The programme offers students the chance to work as attraction attendants helping guests, taking photos and insuring guests have the best experience when visiting the resort,” said Boyd.

Blose has also joined Go Get Funding, a crowd-funding website that allows one to raise money for anything that matters for them, from personal causes, events, projects and more.

However, Blose has not received any sponsors on the site and asks the South Coast community to help her raise the required funds,
