SUMMER driving requires different car care to winter driving. Warmer weather means a lot more outdoor activities and travel time, so make sure your car is in peak condition before you hit the tar mac … or gravel roads.

Here are some handy tips on how to make your Summer a safer one on our roads:

• Check your tyres air, wear and spare

Air – inflate your tyres with the correct amount of tyre pressure required. Improperly inflated tyres, means negative impact on fuel economy, safety and overall performance. Tyre pressure information is usually found on the inside of your door frame.

Wear – tyre wear can affect your safety and increase the risk of accidents, have this checked out by the professionals and be safe.

Spare – always have a back-up plan, this is your spare. Don’t be caught in the middle of nowhere with no spare tyre or, a spare tyre that is flat.

• Check for wear on rubber engine components. Summer is usually a scorcher, and as much as we love the heat our vehicle’s parts are not “fans”. Rubber engine components in our vehicles such as hoses, wiper blades, belts can dry out, crack and wear out as a result of higher temperatures. Bad components can end your summer vacation sooner than you hoped for. Take the time to check all before you start your travels.

• Your car needs to be hydrated too. Keep yourself hydrated, but be sure to hydrate your vehicle too. Check the fluid levels of your vehicle such as brake fluid, oil, power steering, windshield washer, coolant fluids and automatic transmission. Send it in to the professionals to check for you before you hit the road.

• Check your lights. It is vital to ensure that when you indicate your intentions on the road that other road users know it too. Check lights periodically, especially before going on a trip and this will ensure your safety and other road users as well. Elements to check brake lights, hazards, taillights, and headlights.

• Has your AC been checked? This is probably the most important item to check on your checklist for summer. Without a working air con things will heat up fast. Give your air-conditioning a check-up and make sure summer road trips don’t feel longer than they need be. - Supplied.
