Tankers resolve hospital water woes

2017-03-23 06:02

MURCHISON hospital has engaged in talks with Ugu District Municipality after last week’s water crisis there.

Last week the Fever published an article after a concerned reader wrote to the newspaper expressing concerns about the situation.

The hospital’s systems manager Raj Ramharakh said last year the hospital had to get three Jojo tanks from the municipality which were supposed to be filled every week.

“These promises were not kept by the Ugu team.”

Hospital Public Relations Officer Siphamandla Buthelezi said on Wednesday that water interruption remains constant.

“We have just engaged with Ugu Municipality management and they have given us the reassurance that from now water will be uninterrupted, supply will be constant,” said Buthelezi.

He said Ugu promised to place a dedicated municipal team who will ensure that the hospital has water 24/7.

Ugu spokesperson France Zama said in the meeting with Murchison Hospital management that an agreement to have six water tankers fill up the hospital every day was reached.

“Both stakeholders had formed a WhatsApp group where they communicate regularly and on this line of communication the hospital makes direct requests for water relief in the case where supply is interrupted,” said Zama.

He said the meeting further agreed that an additional six water tankers will be deployed to the hospital bringing the total to 12.

“The municipality will be conducting tests on the hospital’s internal reticulation system as we believe there might be internal leaks causing water shortages at this health facility,” said Zama.
