Teacher union members question college appointment

2016-11-24 06:01

TEACHER union Nehawu members at Esayidi Tvet College have raised concerns about the appointment of the college’s Oslo Beach campus head of unit.

The members raised this in a memorandum submitted to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) last week.

Nehawu members allege the position had been open since 2014.

Nehawu branch secretary, Chad Davey, said three interviews had been conducted with the first one being disputed by opposing union, Sadtu, because its candidate arrived late for the interview.

“The second interview was conducted and results for that interview were never released.

“The third interview results were again disputed by Sadtu as the outcomes were not favourable to the union’s preferred candidate,” said Davey.

The members alleged that a candidate for the position belonging to Nehawu was part of all three interviews and was the recommended candidate for the position.

“According to our knowledge, acting head of unit, Vinod Bansee, should have been the successful candidate in all three interview processes, yet he has not been appointed,” said Davey.

Davey said Bansee has been acting in the position since 2014 without remuneration.

“He has 13 years’ experience at the college, of which he has five years’ experience as the acting head of unit,” he said.

College management was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.
