THE Saiva Vazhipatu Kazhagam of South Africa, Port Shepstone branch, held a Thiru Karthigai Deepam celebration on Sunday at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre.

The significance of the event is to pay homage to Lord Siva. Every year thousands of pilgrims travel to Mount Arunchala to do this. A huge fire is lit at the mountain top at sunset and is visible for kilometres. This symbolises the lighting up of the inner being.

The light removes three impurities - darkness, impure thoughts, words and deeds and attachment to the material world. Dance and song items were also rendered at the event and supper was then served.
