2015-11-12 06:00

A COLLISION between a car and bakkie claimed three lives and left 13 injured on Monday morning.

The crash occurred on the R612 near Sawoti, inland from Umzinto. The bakkie, which was transporting mostly elderly people to collect their social grants from pension pay outs, collided with a car.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Vincent Pandarum, the driver of the car allegedly drove onto the wrong side of the road and the right side of both vehicles collided, causing the bakkie to veer off the road and roll a few metres down an embankment into some bushes.

“The driver of the car was charged with driving while under the influence of liquor and appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 10 November,” said Pandarum.

Sanele Goodenough Sithole (31) faces charges of drunk driving and three counts of culpable homicide. He was released on R1 000 bail.

The case was remanded until 8 December.

The names of the deceased have been withheld until their next of kin have been officially informed.

Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services and officers from the RTI and SAPS responded to the scene and found that three people had died.

“The deceased were two elderly women and a man. The paramedics treated 13 patients at the scene for injuries, which ranged from serious to minor,” saod KZN EMS spokesperson, Robert McKenzie.

Once the patients had been stabilised at the scene they were transported to hospital.

“As KZN EMS, we send our condolences to the victim’s families and loved ones and wish the injured patients a speedy recovery,” he said.
