EARLIER this month, Umtentweni-based Legend Reapers MMA participated in the Shuriken MMA Dojo Tournament where they took part in kick-boxing, mixed martial arts (cage fighting) and grappling.

Lee Thomas from Legend Reapers, the first fighter in her weight class for females under 50kg, had to go against Crizelle Taylor from Garage Boys. Thomas dominated the fight and won by TKO in the first round.

Rhey Cordier (under 70kg) was matched with Shaun Ford from Gladiator Fight Academy. Ford was three kilograms overweight and was given an hour to drop the excess weight. He was weighed in again, but was still two kilograms overweight. After this, Cordier was given the option to fight or forfeit, but he decided to take the fight. After a nail-biting fight Cordier took second place.

William Marais (under 70kg), the coach of Legend Reapers MMA, was matched with Yuven Pillay from Team Kamikaze. After a tough first round, it went to the second round, which was dominated by Marais, defeating Pillay with a TKO.

Ronel Potgieter (under 70kg) went up against Marina Auer from the Zoo. Potgieter dominated the grappling bout and defeated Auer by decision, taking first place in the first round 1. This was her first grappling win.

Dean Viljoen (under 80kg) was matched with Chene Booysen from Team MMA Fighter. Unfortunately, his opponent went for the grappling and not the mixed martial arts. Viljoen was matched up again against Daan Pieterse from Ballito Bulldogs. Viljoen’s shoulder was dislocated during the fight and he got second place.
