DESPITE being considered
enemy number one by many, Ugu District Municipality Manager DD Naidoo won a silver medal in the Best Municipal Manager of the Year category at the Premier’s Service Excellence Awards on July 20.

Ugu also won silver for Best-Run Municipality. The awards were held at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban, hosted by KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Willies Mchunu.

Naidoo has been in the hot seat since last year over the water crisis and numerous protests by Ugu employees demanding overtime pay as well as insurance pay-outs.

Some employees, opposition parties and civic organisations even called on him to resign.

Recent media reports revealed that his future at the municipality was hanging in the balance as his contract comes to an end at the end of August. The municipality advertised the post earlier this year.

At the award celebration last Wednesday, an inside source informed Fever a number of Ugu general managers submitted sick notes to avoid coming to the event.

“It’s obvious now that inside tensions will rise as some managers applied for his post,” said the source.

Anothers source said the mayor will have to consider the fact that Naidoo has proved to be a reliable candidate for the position and should remain as MM.

In praising the awards, Ugu mayor Mondli Chiliza said they are an indication that the municipality is making progress in the right direction to improve the lives of communities.

“It is encouraging to receive such awards, which is testimony that our efforts are being recognised. and we will continue forge ahead in making a better life for our communities,” said Chiliza.
