UGU District Municipality has once again contributed towards assisting tertiary students from disadvantaged backgrounds to claim their right to education through the municipality’s annual Mayor Bursary Fund Programme.

A total of 37 students from across the district were awarded bursaries totaling R380 000 by the Ugu deputy mayor Cllr Mondli Chiliza, speaker, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede and special programmes portfolio member Cllr Busi Machi at the official bursary awards at Umdlalo Lodge on Monday.

Of those, 36 were awarded bursaries worth R10 000 each and one returning student was awarded a full bursary worth R20 000.

Delivering the key note address Gumede said that although the municipality’s core function is the provision of water and sanitation services, it has extended its scope of operation and taken a great interest in education, awarding bursaries to well performing students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The inception of this programme came about through the identification of a need to financially assist deserving students to further their education and become professionals that can build our district. Through these programmes, we put emphasis on the importance of local government playing a pivotal role towards building a strong local graduate professional base by providing much needed assistance to deserving students.

In 2016, the municipality granted more than R230 000 worth of bursaries and since inception of this programme, numerous students have benefited with some being assisted with 100% bursaries. The municipality plans on increasing the number of beneficiaries to 60 in 2018 and further sponsoring up to 100 the year after.

We are planting a seed towards ensuring an improved level of the graduate professional base in the district and we will achieve this through ensuring that education remains at the apex of our priorities in moving our district forward, and the Mayor’s Bursary Fund reflects this commitment.
