RATED as the biggest underwater photo-graphy competition, World ShootOut Underwater Photo Grand Prix Competition 2015 closed its entries at the end of 2015.

Winners from all over the world were announced at Germany’s annual Boot Show in January­ after a gruelling six-week judging process.

Producer David Pilosof initiated the first World ShootOut competition in 2011, breaking all boundaries and introducing an international competition never featured before.

To date there is reportedly no other under- water photography competition that attracts such a significant number of entries, nor offering such spectacular prizes.

Involvement in this initiative came as a result of attending one of the world’s largest oceanic and water-themed exhibitions, Boot Show in Dusseldorf, Germany in January 2015.

The Boot Show attracts over 230 000 visitors and over 1200 exhibitors annually, followed by a strong European media contingent of over 300 delegates.

Hundreds of photographers from around the world take part each year in the World ShootOut competition and thousands of images were submitted in the 2015 competition.

Entrants from Germany, France, Slovakia, U.S. and Belgium were some of the countries that participated in the sharks category.

Ugu South Coast Tourism came on board as one of the main prize partners, offering a 14-day trip for two to the paradise of the Zulu Kingdom, valued at $6 000 for the winner of the prestigious­ sharks category.

The prize includes international flights, two dives per day on the famous Protea Banks with African Dive Adventures and daily dives on Aliwal­ Shoal with Crystal Divers. Many Ugu South Coast Tourism (UGSCT) members have also contributed with accommodation, activity and meal sponsorships.

“We see this campaign as an excellent opportunity not only to showcase our diverse destination and our two world-class dive sites, but as a way to interact with the diving and adventure fraternity and with those who treasure nature as much as we do.

“The fact that we gained international television exposure at the prize-giving ceremony in January really assists in putting us on the global radar.

“We would like to extend our congratulations to the winner, Tanya Houppermans, and look forward to welcoming her and her husband on their forthcoming dream trip,” said UGSCT CEO, Justin Mackrory.

Based in the U.S., the Houppermans live outside Washington DC.

“My husband and I are very adventurous. In fact we both used to teach skydiving, so looking at the South Coast itinerary, we cannot believe our luck - action, adventure, diving and with such diverse experiences on offer. Neither of us has ever been to South Africa, or anywhere in Africa, this truly is a bucket-list dream come true. We are thrilled to be able to participate in this adventure,” she said.
