AN 80-year-old Uvongo man became an instant hero in Australia last week after saving a home from burning down with a dog inside.

Tony Berry, who was visiting his daughter in the town of Woombye, was a passenger in a car driven by her when he noticed smoke coming from the veranda of a house.

His daughter, Charmaine Grobler, said she initially thought it was braai smoke, but his father said it looked like the house was on fire. They made a u-turn to investigate what was going on.

“We found that the house was indeed on fire and there was smoke everywhere,” said Grobler.

They entered the house and while Grobler called the emergency services, Berry tried to put out the flames using a bucket.

By the time emergency services arrived, a few more people were at the scene helping to douse the flames. A Maltese poodle was also rescued from the house.

Berry has been interviewed on local radio and television stations and even made the front page on a local newspaper.

“I’m so proud of him,” said Grobler.
