LAST week we reported about the planned three-day Wild Coast serve-safari for volunteers on the Umtamvuna Ridge to kick-start a hands-on socio-economic and social-cohesian movement for people who wants to make a positive contribution to South African’s future. If you missed the news flash – theme safaris will build up towards a primary eco-tourism development reality production for grassroots citizens that will be launched with a festival on the Umtamvuna Ridge at a later stage.

Joint-ventures will not only ensure an income base for locals right from the start – but will also help to ground an integrated business model and much needed nation building spirit. In association with VIP Multimedia Network Solutions the two involved community members, Priscilla Nyembezi and Norman Stoffels, want to invite volunteers, groups of friends, family, church, or youth leaders to join them either for a camp out on the Ridge next to the waterfall from 15 to the 17 July or for day visits that will form part of a kick-start phase in preparation for the main project.

Although basic construction activities will only begin after the first crowd funding campaign during the October holidays, we would love to engage visitors in basic chores that might vary from leveling soil for eco braais, planting trees and erecting temporary structures to protecting plants from grazing animals, producing some ‘mahala’ bricks, giving locals guidance in the kitchen, or by simply offering advice. However, there will be ample time for hikes to scenic pit-stops, bundu games, paddling, and socialising with locals around campfires. The venture will start from a clean slate and there is currently a single building that can be used as a pit-stop – so those who choose the camp out option must bring their own camping gear.

Days will start at sunrise with breakfast and an informative chat before we venture out for either a chore, or adventure activity. After lunch visitors will get time to relax before everybody helps to make a campfire for a group discussion and stick bread treat. Visitors can also release sky lanterns with messages of hope. The only cost for the first camp out will be for meals prepared by the local ladies, a paddle boat ride (for those who choose this option), a reasonable charge for members of the local policing forum who will provide a security service, and for guides during a hike along the Umtamvuna Ridge to visit the site earmarked for Priscilla’s eco-enterprise venture. Day visitors can join any activity that appeals to them.

The weekend will be followed by the 67 minute Nelson Mandel Day Initiative on the 18th of July and it will be appropriate to conclude our ‘do-good’ weekend with a Flintstone Golf tournament on the rugged rocks of the Umtamvuna Ridge. Participants will be able to make their own felt golf balls – while rustic golf clubs carved by locals can be ordered prior to the event for those who want to purchase them as memory souvenirs. There will be a small entrance fee to cover the felt ball exercise – and a tip for the youngsters that put up the flagpoles.

If you want to become part of the camp out, day visits, or help in any way contact Riana on 083-941-9536 or email riana@vipmmns.org.za - Supplied.
