Water leak to be repaired this month

2016-05-05 06:00

A MAN, who frequents the N2 near Bhobhoyi, has noticed a that stream of water has flowed along the road (near Kulucrete) for over a year and Ugu District Municipality is yet to attend to it.

“It’s definitely a leaking pipe and it really cannot be missed. Imagine all that clean, drinking water that is being wasted,” he said.

“Ugu has imposed these restrictions and rules, but they need to attend to these leaks in order to save water.”

He said municipal vehicles travel along the same road daily and it is hard to miss.

“Why wait for someone to contact the call centre and report it when staff themselves must have noticed this persistent leak?”

Spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama, confirmed that there is a leak, but it was not drinking water.

“The water from the leak does not reach the Bhobhoyi plant and is not purified. It is not for consumption.”

He said repairing the pipe is not straightforward and will require the entire plant to be shut down. “In order for the leak to stop, the plant will have to be shut down for two days to three days. This will affect customers from Hibberdene to Ramsgate and some areas of Gamalakhe, Murschison and KwaMadlala,” said Zama.

Ugu plans to conduct repairs in mid-May.

“Ugu will inform its customers when this repair is being implemented, which will require their full co-operation,” he added.
