‘Water leaks will be repaired soon’

AFRIFORUM Margate says it will send the Ugu District Municipality a final demand to attend to complaints of leaking pipes soon.

AfriForum chairman, Wessel Pretorius, said there has been “slack response” from Ugu in addressing water-related breaks in the district.

One of these complaints is of a leak in the reservoir in Palm Beach, which was reported in June.

To date, the complaint has not been attended to.

“It is common knowledge that Ugu is losing 35% of our total drinking water capacity because of poor maintenance and failure to plan for the future,” he said.

“AfriForum Margate and Hibiscus Coast residents report water-related issues every day. We have the odd reply stating they will attend to it, but then fail to do so.”

He said Ugu vowed at the recent “Dialogue on Water Challenges” that it would do everything in its power to combat loss of water.

“They even spoke about increasing our water tariffs and imposing fines for excessive use, but fail to respond to mainline pipe bursts within a reasonable time,” said Pretorius.

AfriForum will now send them a final demand before enacting the law under their Water Services Licence to repair and act accordingly.

France Zama, spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, said an assessment was carried out in the chamber where the leak is coming from and the fittings and connections within this chamber were found to be very old.

“This warranted the total fabrication of all the pieces of pipes and fittings to be carried out in view of totally refurbishing this chamber as it is the main junction supplying Trafalgar, San Lameer, Grassmere and Southbroom,” he said.

He said on Wednesday the municipality’s welder was making these pieces.

“This is expected to be completed by Monday, 14 December and then shutdown will be carried out in view of replacing the whole chamber. This leak is then expected to be closed on the 17 December,” said Zama.
