What a bunch of losers

2016-07-07 06:00

THE leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, visited Port Shepstone on 1 July while on his countrywide campaign trail for the local government elections due to take place on 3 August.

The Ugu South constituency decided to take him to Mkholombe informal settlement to witness first-hand the conditions which the community has to survive and live under.

The DA advertised this visit within the community well in advance and there was excitement from within the community for this visit. The reason we wanted him to go there was to see the filthy conditions, dangerous illegal electrical connections, open toilets and few standpipes for water, etc.

During all our previous visits the ANC were nowhere to be seen apart from a faded T-shirt here and there, but suddenly, on the day of Maimane’s visit, we found a vehicle loaded with ANC T-shirts and activists handing them out together with flyers.

Their activists were singing their songs and trying to intimidate the locals not to support the DA. We also noticed that a huge truck was offloading food and fresh produce, which I assume was part of the “Food for Waste” HCM programme.

The strange thing is, everyone involved was wearing ANC T-shirts. It is quite clear that the ANC confuses party and state.

Nevertheless, when Mmusi arrived, he was greeted by a huge crowd of enthusiastic DA supporters who out-danced and out-sang the miserable booing attempt from the outnumbered ANC comrades.

My reason for writing this letter is to illustrate how politically bankrupt the ANC has become – even at grass-roots level. When they have nothing to offer the electorate, but a track record of stench and decay expecting the poorest of the poor to survive under the most ghastly conditions. They still have the audacity to try and prevent the other parties from campaigning. This took place in the same week when all parties signed a pledge of tolerance to allow free and fair elections.

All the opposition parties stick to the agreements we agreed to uphold except for the underperforming ANC. In the words of Justice Malala, what a bunch of losers.
