Ballito shooting possible ‘taxi hit’ from page 1

2015-05-27 06:00

THE police’s taxi violence task team is investigating a shooting, believed to be a hit, near a Ballito petrol station on Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that dockets of attempted murder and malicious damage to property had been registered.

“It is alleged that the 41-year-old victim was driving near the Sasol petrol [station] when he was confronted by an unknown suspect who fired shots at him. “The suspect fled the scene in his white Nissan. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made,” Zwane said.

A source close to the investigation, who could not be named, said the victim had been identified as a taxi boss.

“We will not release the name of the taxi boss amid obvious concerns for his safety. “What we know is that he was pulling into the petrol station when the occupants of an SUV opened fire on his car.

“A total of five shots hit the car, but luckily the victim was in no way injured. “From the evidence gathered at the scene it is possible that a high-calibre rifle was used in the shooting,” the source said.

Series of attacks

The area has been a hot spot for taxi violence and the shooting follows a series of similar attacks as the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo taxi associations engage in pitched battles.

In the past 12 months, taxi violence has been reported in Durban, Ladysmith, Ballito, KwaDukuza, Maphumulo and Mandeni - varying in location from malls, the N2, townships to quiet suburban roads.

In January in Stanger Manor, 17 hitmen are alleged to have ambushed a convoy carrying six Maphumulo taxi bosses. Three men died, and over 140 bullet casings were found on site
