COOL Leaders clawed their way from a set down to snatch a thrilling 2-1 win against Darnall United in a pulsating KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Division One League game played at the association courts on Thursday night.

Darnall were first out of the starting blocks in the opening set with Saana Banda and Ismail Essop putting points on the board with ease against a flat-footed Cool Leaders outfit. The fierce, strong wind did not do the Cool Leaders lads any favours, who battled to string together three decent passes against the onslaught of their rivals.

Darnall romped to a comfortable 25-17 win in the opening set. They continued to dictate terms in the 2nd set, taking an early 9-6 lead. Cool Leaders gradually chewed away the deficit before levelling the scores at 15-15.

Robin Reddy and Vincent Pillay, playing in tandem, enjoyed a bevy of good sets from the crafty Wilson Govender. Darnall were bombarded with attacks from the left and right and their rearguard was badly exposed.

Cool Leaders raced to a 24-17 lead, but Darnall staved off six match-points in a row, reducing the deficit to 23-24 before succumbing to a 23-25 defeat. With the scores tied at 1-1, the outcome of the match was decided on a tie-breaker (comprising of 15 points).

Banda, using his superior height advantage put Darnall in the driving seat (5-0) after hammering five successive winners. Cool Leaders silenced their critics after summoning a timeout, quickly snuffing out the huge deficit before levelling the scores at 6-6.

Cool Leaders forged ahead 9-7 through the brilliance of the left-handed Alvin Ramalingasm and Reddy. Cool Leaders hopes of enjoying a 3-point cushion was dented after Pillay served outside, but Jayson quickly restored Cool Leaders 2-point advantage (11-9).

Darnall’s unforced error at the death allowed their rivals to go three points clear at the top (12-9) before Reddy offered them a lifeline (12-10) after serving outside. Essop reduced the deficit to a solitary point (11-12) to give Darnall a glimmer of hope.

Man-of-the-match, Pillay scored two winners at the death to push Cool Leaders to match-point (11-14). Essop hit the ball on the net to give Cool Leaders victory (15-11) on a golden platter.

Skipper of Cool Leaders, Cooks Moodley was ecstatic with the performance of his charges who are starting to gel together as a consolidated outfit.

Meanwhile, Frendz cemented their position at the summit of the log table with a resounding 25-11, 25-20 win against MOB.

Grove End recorded their 5th successive league victory in the EZE’S Electrical-sponsored Competitive League after beating Manor in straight sets (2-0). Randsons slumped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of nemesis Warriors Sport on Thursday night
