Four schoolgirls killed in accident

FOUR families are mourning the loss of their daughters who were killed in an accident on the R102 Compensation intersection on Friday.

Caitlyn Oliver (14), Tamia Sewparsad (13), Saisha Shampersad (14), Andrea­ Thaver (17) and other pupils and teachers from Victoria Christian Academy, La Lucia, were on their way back home from a leadership camp at the Rain Farm when the accident occurred.

Two others, pupil Muhle Qwabe and teacher Kris Ackerman, were critically injured and are currently stable in hospital.

According to the school’s Facebook page, which is updated regularly about funeral arrangements and the condition of Qwabe and Ackerman, funeral services for Shampersad and Sewparsad took place on Sunday. The service for Thaver took place on Monday and the memorial service for Oliver will take place today (Wednesday) at the school hall.

Updating on the condition of Ackerman and Qwabe the page said: “Mr Kris Ackerman had surgery last night [Friday]. The surgery went well. He is still on a ventilator and in an induced coma. Muhle Qwabe is on a ventilator and has swelling on the brain. She is doing much better than yesterday.”

A following update on Monday stated: “Muhle will be going into theatre this morning to relieve pressure on the brain. Please keep praying for her.”
