THE inaugural netball tournament, hosted by Ndwedwe Netball on Saturday, May 16, was a huge success.

President of Ndwedwe Netball, Bajabulile Ncube said: “Ndwedwe is a very vast area with players living far apart and getting all of them to a central venue is indeed a mammoth undertaking.

“But, we were overwhelmed with Saturday’s response with five teams showing up for the opening tournament on home soil.

“Players are clearly hungry for the game and expressed joy and excitement at participating in their first tournament at the Ndwedwe municipal grounds.”

Matches were played on a league basis. Five teams comprising of Sisters, Tigers, MK, Brilliant and Sunshine contested the tournament.

At the end of the round-robin matches Sunshine were crowned champions with Brilliant emerging runners-up. MK secured a podium finish after finishing third.

Ncube was indebted the Ndwedwe Municipality for providing transport for the players to the ground and look forward to their continued support when the Ndwedwe Netball League gets under way next month.

She thanked the Department of Sport and Recreation, technical officials, team managers and players who made the sacrifice in ensuring the success of Saturday’s tournament.

She urged players to train hard in preparation for the Kwanaloga Games to be held later this year
